Why Proper Dog Grooming Matters
This might seem like it goes without saying, but just like humans, hygiene and proper grooming are vital for dogs. And that’s not just because of the potential smell if they go without! There are a number of practical, health-based reasons why dog grooming is so important, such as:
Keeping a healthy coat. One of the biggest parts of dog grooming is, of course, brushing their coat and keeping it detangled and clean. Regular, thorough brushing helps keep your dog’s coat free of dust and dandruff. It also prevents matting, a more severe tangle that can eventually lead to skin conditions underneath the area. Brushing regularly also promotes and stimulates natural oils in your dog’s coat, which will keep it looking glossy, shiny, and healthy!
Keeping skin clean and healthy. When a dog’s fur is left ungroomed, it can tangle and lead to issues with their skin quite quickly. Left unchecked, this can progress to serious skin irritations, infections, and more—a problem which only builds up the longer it’s left unaddressed.
Catching preventable illnesses sooner. Dogs are wonderful in so many ways, but communicating health issues is generally not their strong suit! That’s why we always take the time to do a thorough check of your dog for any potential illnesses or conditions when we do our grooming. It’s the perfect chance to spot a number of problems, including:
- Rashes
- Lesions
- Inflammation/swelling
- Lumps and other abnormalities
- Flea bites
- Bald or dry patches on the skin
In the case of all these examples, the sooner the issue is detected, the sooner it can be treated. This can make a huge difference in the overall health of your dog.
Keep ears and eyes clear and healthy. Our dogs rely on their senses, so it’s important that we do our part to keep their vision and hearing running smoothly while we go about our grooming. We’ll always do a safe and thorough cleaning of your dog’s ears while checking for infection or infestation, and we’ll do the same for their eyes—ensuring they’re clear of excess hair and infection.
Keep dogs and people safe with nail trimming. We always do a checkup of your dog’s nails when they come in. We’ll trim them, ensuring they don’t accidentally injure their people or another dog while playing. This can also help prevent ingrown nails, as well as give relief from arthritis and joint pain in older dogs.
