Drop-ins for Nail Touch-Ups

Have you ever been playing with your dog only to be accidentally scratched? It’s no fun, is it? That’s why we offer a drop-in dog nail trim touch-up service. Sometimes it’s too soon for a full-on nail trim and your pup simply needs a quick once-over to ensure they’re not hurting you (or your floors and furniture!).

Why your dog's nails need to be trimmed

We recommend dogs to come in every 4 weeks for a full nail trim for several reasons. In the wild, dogs’ nails are naturally worn down as they use them on a day-to-day basis for traveling and hunting. With domestic dogs however, things like that don’t happen at nearly the same rate, meaning a dog’s nails can grow too long and create a whole bunch of issues, both for them and their owners! In the case of small dogs, they don’t have enough weight to wear their nails down, which can also lead to several problems.

If you don’t keep up with nail maintenance, these issues will become more frequent in your life, including:

  • Nails growing directly into the paw pads themselves. This is especially true for the dew claw because this nail doesn’t touch the ground and therefore doesn’t get the wear and tear to keep it short.
  • Nails extending over the paw pad, preventing your dog from getting traction on the ground.
  • Long nails that will cause injuries to your dog on certain types of terrain, such as slatted decks.
  • Long nails that force the dog to walk on the backs of their feet, causing knee and shoulder issues; worst case scenario they start walking on their hocks.
  • Excess pressure on long nails which cause them to break.
  • Long nails getting caught and snagged on carpets at home.
  • More frequent accidental injuries to people or other dogs while playing.

This is why we recommend owners to keep an eye on their dogs’ feet and dew claws, and to take them to the vet right away if there’s signs of an infection.

Don’t fall for nail-trimming ‘alternatives’!

It’s no secret that keeping your dog’s nails at a healthy length can be a real challenge, and many so-called alternatives have cropped up as a result.

Something that’s gained some attention in the past few years is specially textured agility courses. The surfaces of these tools are covered in a coarse, sand-papery material that claims to naturally wear your dog’s nails down as they traverse it. While this might sound like an amazing idea, we’d actually advise against it. If your dog’s nails are too long as is, having them do an agility course could easily leave them prone to injury.

Similarly, some people believe that having their dog do higher-intensity exercise on abrasive surfaces like cement and asphalt is a good alternative to actually trimming their nails. And while it’s true that this mimics their ancestors’ natural solution to nail-trimming, it can actually harm more than help. Having your dog run and walk on rough, porous surfaces can easily leave your dog’s paw pads covered in blisters and abrasions. The repeated impact on hard surfaces can also open your dog up to the risk of arthritis, and hot concrete in the summer can even lead to your dog getting heatstroke.

In short, there’s almost no easy way to keep your dog’s nails trimmed. We say ‘almost’ because there is one easy way: getting help from the professionals!
